L. M. Montgomery goes up to the counter and orders a short passion tea. She chats idly with the barista, who seems spirited and lively. The manager of the shop scolds the barista for speaking so casually to customers. Starbucks is a civilized establishment, for God’s sake, and we must maintain the utmost propriety.
A few hours later, L. M. Montgomery is still in the shop. The barista’s shift has ended, and the two of them are going to play in the creek near the shop. The shop manager’s heart seems to have warmed a bit. L. M. Montgomery takes full credit for this.
