“Character is a set of walls, like the four walls of a squash court. They are the boundaries of what a fictional person can do.
Things happen and a person reacts. He cannot have a reaction outside the walls of “character.” For the most part the hero cannot, due to his moral nature, gun down a defenseless man. This wall of his character makes him appealing but, in certain emergencies, limits his range of action.”
