“It’s little, it’s unpretentious, it slips easily into a back pocket or purse and can be pulled out without fanfare. It’s the little notebook, and without it some of our best ideas would get lost. After all, it is much more difficult to jot down an idea for a story that pops into your head when you have to ask someone to borrow a pen and some paper. It is also more difficult to retrieve that idea when you know it’s someplace in your book bag, but first you have to empty the whole satchel out on to the bed and go through every dirty tissue and crumpled To Do list, searching for it.”
