“I’m not the first to say it, but I think the key to nonfiction writing is reporting. I used to work at a small-town paper scribbling two articles a day. And I learned to ask a ridiculous number of questions. As in, “You were eating lunch when the earthquake struck? What were you eating? What kind of sandwich? Turkey and cheddar? I see. Did you drop the turkey and cheddar sandwich?” And on and on.”
