Brian Friel walks up to the counter, dragging behind him seven shoddily-dressed men and women clinging to a three-person tandem bicycle. They tumble to and fro, crying out insults and hugging each other in turn. One of them seems well-adjusted, and one of them is carrying a shovel. They all want strong tea, and they want it badly, and it’s a metaphor, and if it’s English Breakfast they will send it back.
